Some Animal Related Facts about our First President
Washington was a great lover of dogs; he kept fox hounds and one of his personal favorites was named "Sweet Lips."

While Washington is known for his honesty by the famed cherry tree story, a much lesser known story about him is one of my favorites.
It seems, that during the battle of Germantown (Oct 1777) the opposing General's dog (reputed to be a fox terrier) wandered into Washington's camp. It is said that Washington called a cease-fire, and ordered the dog returned to it's owner (which was determined by the inscription on it's collar).
I found it interesting that in my research of this story, none of the references I found mentioned the Bible verse Exodus 23:4-5:
"When you come upon your enemy's ox or donkey going astray, you shall bring it back..."

Washington's two best known horses were Nelson and Blueskin, who served with him during the Revolutionary War and were later retired to Mount Vernon. Of the two, Blueskin was nearly white; but his coat was actually a pale bluish grey. Washington was considered the "best horseman in all of Virginia."
